new website
I just wanted to announce my new music blog: http://www.quiet-too-quiet.com/ . It only has three posts, but since I’ve set it up so all mp3s I post are automatically deleted after two weeks, I figured I better actually announce it.
I imagine it’ll mostly be shoegaze and indie-pop. I’m thinking of having a Shoegaze Sunday category. We’ll see. It’s a work in progress.
happy easter
I made a couple easter eggs. One of them almost looked animated:
The other one featured a giant robot shooting lasers out of his head at a tank, soldier, helicopter, and jet bomber.
(not pictured, the dude on a bmx bike sticker doing a wheelie behind the robot)
Santa Monica floating in Space
On my recent vacation I bought a whole bunch of CDs at Amoeba in SF. Whole lotta indie-pop. Marine Research, Call and Response, Bishop Allen, Foundry Field Recordings, Cub, Beulah, Voxtrot.Anyways, Call and Response have this song “California in Floating in Space” which is perfect for this footage I took while on the ferris wheel on the Santa Monica pier.
review: a general theory of love

Only got half-way through before I gave up. They dispense with Freud very early on, but then seemingly rehash his theories. Apparently everything I do is a reflection on how well my mother parented me as an infant and toddler. And I am destined to only be attracted to people like my mother, unless I have years of talk therapy. And anyone who wasn’t perfectly raised, well, they should probably just be shot. It’d be kinder.
Also, the writing was terrible. If they wanted to talk about chaos theory, they introduced a water drop splashing around. But it’s not just any water drop. No, this one is from that fountain in the center of Rome, Trevi. And when they want to talk about how we can sympathize with someone else’s emotions, why look, it’s Archimedes and he just discovered buoyancy! Haha, now that, I can relate to.
Maybe I should read the rest of it, but there was only one thing I didn’t learn from introspection. I didn’t know that there is a physical seperation between the neocortex, limbic, and reptilian brains. I thought those were just metaphors. Neat! Also, doesn’t the idea of the self being composed of three parts echo Freud again?
Best thing about the book is the great cover design.
And working mothers should feel really guilty. Shame on them.

I just heard this song on a Music That Matters podcast and it’s great. I had heard a couple Bishop Allen songs before, but nothing as super as this song. Didn’t know they were local to Brooklyn either. Maybe I can catch a show by them.
iPhone costs
I’ve seen a lot of blog updates talking about the true cost of the iPhone, including the monthly fees. It comes to about $2000+ for two years. Which is true, and should be considered if you’ve never had a cell phone before.
They should be subtracting the current fees they’re already paying. I pay about $60 a month, which coincides with the $60 a month AT&T plan that’s being offered. So really, my main consideration is whether I can afford the iPhone itself. The monthly fees will stay the same.

NYC Popfest 2007, night 1
I had a great time last night at show 1 of NYC Popfest. Lots of great people and I took
some great photos. More after the cut.
MacOS X memory alignment
I had a hard time finding a definitive statement on MacOS X memory alignment so I did my own tests. On 10.4/intel, both stack and heap memory is 16 byte aligned. So people porting software can stop looking for memalign() and posix_memalign(). It’s not needed.
shadows excerpt
This is an excerpt from a work in progress video project.
I’m actually not going to use this footage, as much as I like it. I want to redo it in widescreen format. An HD video camera would also be nice, but HD for home movies is overkill and I don’t think I make these often enough to justify the expense.
The music is from Matthew Nichols, who I’ve written about before.
